I had a hard time correcting this image. The walls are yellow, so I tried to adjust for all of the reflections in her fur. I never could get it quite right. I am hoping with the new techniques we are learning this week, I will be better equipped to deal with this type of situation. Also, the catch lights are almost non-existent in her eyes, no matter how I lightened them. I also think the vignette is a bit distracting. She could also use a little more dodging in the light areas of her fur.
As for strengths, I think the cropping is done well here. The details of the face are crisp with a shallow depth of field. I believe the exposure is good. I feel that I can do highlights and shadows pretty well, but my color correcting needs work.
All in all a decent photo, but not one of my best. I would most definitely like to see her smile. Maybe next time...
Happy shooting!

Great analysis. I actually think this image is very well color corrected. White dogs are very tricky as you mentioned (reflecting the color of the walls on the fur). One piece of advice I might plug in would be to further lighten the eye color, especially on the right eye. Good post!
ReplyDeleteI agree with your self evaluation about the photo. My main observation (even before reading Shannon's above) would be that if you could make only one change it would be the eyes. Adding a larger highlight in the dog's right (our left)eye and a good size one in the left eye (where there's none now) would make me really engage with this pup.
ReplyDeleteThis is a very appealing dog, just visually because of the beauty of his coat so that one change would make him a home run for me as a potential adoptor. You've made him seem almost eager (definitely not shy) in this photo so great job!
One other suggestion that to contrast him more from the wall color might be to lighten the top of his head so its' white seems more distinct from the grey behind it.
@ Professor Johnstone...Thank you! I am finding more and more that the white fur is the hardest to get right. I'll keep trying. :)
ReplyDelete@ Georgia...I agree with your comment. I think the vignette is making the wall appear greyer than it is as well. Practice, practice, practice...right?
